BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Activists are preparing for a major international solidarity march next year, organizers said as a preparatory conference was set to open on Monday.

Arab and international solidarity groups from more than 20 countries will gather in Amman to prepare for the march to Palestine from neighboring countries, slated for March 30, or Land Day, in 2012.

Preparation committee director Ribhi Halloum told the Kuwait news agency on Sunday that protesters will head towards Palestinian borders from Jordan, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon.

The protest aims to move the right of return possessed by Palestinian refugees from theory to practice, Halloum said, adding that preparation work had started to ensure that the action is a success.

On May 15, thousands of protesters massed on Israel's borders with Syria, Lebanon and Gaza, trying to force their way across on the anniversary of the mass dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 creation of the state of Israel. Four were killed on the Syrian border and ten in Lebanon by Israeli fire.

On the anniversary of the 1967 war when Israel captured the Golan from Syria as well as the West Bank and Gaza Strip, hundreds of demonstrators stormed a ceasefire line in the occupied Golan Heights, with Damascus saying 23 demonstrators were killed and Israel saying it was aware of 12 casualties.
