OIC Secretary General Launches Urgent Appeal to Rescue Health Sector in Gaza

Jeddah, January 03 (QNA) - The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has launched an urgent appeal for emergency medical assistance to the Gaza Strip in order to address the unprecedented health crisis in the Strip. Ihsanoglu appealed to the OIC Member States, humanitarian organisations and philanthropists in the Muslim world as well as to civil society and international organisations in the world to provide urgent assistance to the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, particularly for the treatment of cancer diseases, the provision of dialysis supplies with a view to alleviating the difficult humanitarian situation due to the lack of medicines and the other health requirements. Meanwhile, the OIC Humanitarian Affairs Department stated that the OIC humanitarian aid coordination offices in Cairo and Gaza are prepared to coordinate the provision of the required assistance and facilitate access to beneficiaries in the Gaza Strip. In another respect, health centres and hospitals in the Gaza Strip are unable to meet the health needs particularly due to hospitals'' failure to provide medicines and medical supplies, which may lead to a disaster in the health sector which is already exhausted as a result of the Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip. Health ministry warns of medical crisis as Israeli attacks escalate

GAZA, (PIC)-- Spokesman for the health ministry Ashraf Al-Qudra warned that 310 types of medicines and medical consumables are no longer available in the Gaza Strip and will result in serious consequences especially in light of the escalating Israeli aggression. "In light of the repeated Zionist attacks on our people in the Gaza Strip, we appeal to those who have living conscience to provide the health sector with its needs of medicines and medical consumables," Qudra said in a press release on Saturday. He noted that the limited amount of anesthetic drugs are about to run out completely from emergency and surgery units because of the increasing number of causalities admitted into Gaza hospital. http://www.palestine-info.co.uk

Fuel, medicine 'crisis' in Gaza hospitals

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Muhammad Al-Kashef, a health ministry official in Gaza, warned Tuesday of a crisis hitting the sector as medicine shortages have plagued the enclave for two months.

Al-Kashef said the ministry of health in Ramallah is largely responsible for the crisis after excluding Gaza from its legal share or 40 percent of supplies like medications and other consumables.

In the past three years, he said, Gaza has received about 30 percent of the overall budget for health services. In 2011, however, the crisis reached a peak despite advanced warning.

The ministry has announced a state of emergency and reduced health services such as dental clinics and children's centers, the official added.

Moussa As-Samak, head of administrative and financial affairs in the ministry, said there was also a crisis of fuel shortages and spare parts for generators.

The generators, which operate for 8 to 12 hours a day, need maintenance, he said.
