Demonstrators have assembled outside the UN offices in the Lebanese capital of Beirut to express their support for a sovereign Palestinian state.

Over 2,000 people took part in the demonstration on Tuesday, waving Lebanese and Palestinian flags as well as banners that read, “Palestine, the 194th state in the United Nations,” AFP reported.

“We are here to show our support for Palestine's right to be recognized as a state, a right that is stipulated by international law,” said Kazem Hassan, one of the organizers of the joint Lebanese-Palestinian rally.

The move came as Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has expressed determination to formally submit the Palestinian membership bid to the UN on Friday, when he will also address the General Assembly.

More than 100 countries have so far officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state based on the 1967 borders.

The United States has made it clear to Abbas that it will veto any request presented to the UN Security Council for making the Palestinian state a new member.
