Egyptian flag still flying over Israel’s embassy in Cairo

[ 25/08/2011 - 11:34 AM ]

CAIRO, (PIC)– The Egyptian flag that was raised by young man Ahmed Al-Shahhat on the roof of Israel’s embassy in Cairo is still seen flying alone, according to eyewitnesses on Tuesday morning.
Earlier rumor had it that the Israeli flag was raised once again over the embassy next to the Egyptian flag.

For his part, governor of Asharqiya province Azzazi Azzazi decided to honor Egyptian young man Ahmed Al-Shahhat who removed Israel’s flag from its embassy in Cairo and replaced it with the Egyptian flag.

Azzazi said he would honor Shahhat in a ceremony held at the province headquarters, and pledged to give him a government job worthy of his stature as a national hero and an apartment for his intended marriage, according to news reports from Cairo.

In another context, grand imam of Al-Azhar mosque and university Ahmed Al-Tayeb warned Israel of the Egyptian people’s wrath, stressing they can no longer tolerate its criminal actions and its constant disrespect of all agreements and international resolutions.

Tayeb hailed the Egyptian youth for their revolutionary spirit and their rejection of Israel’s aggression against Egypt and demanded the Arab leaders to respond to the will of their peoples and help them to get their legitimate rights.

Nunu: We won’t accept killing to continue while calm being enforced

[ 25/08/2011 - 12:25 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Taher Al-Nunu, the Gaza government’s spokesman, has held the Israeli occupation authority fully responsible for the consequences of its military escalation over the past few hours that killed and wounded dozens of citizens.

Nunu told the Aqsa radio station at dawn Thursday, “We won’t accept killing to continue while calm is being enforced”, adding that the Palestinian people know how to deal with such a situation and to defend itself.

He said that intensified contacts were underway between his government and the parties that brokered the calm mentioning in particular Egypt and the UN to brief them about the Israeli escalation and to tell them that the situation was not accepted and should come to an immediate end.
Nunu said that consultations were also made with Palestinian factions to consider means of dealing with the situation at hand.

The Palestinian foreign ministry in a statement on Wednesday strongly denounced the Israeli violation of the calm, charging that the escalation indicated that the IOA was not interested in preserving calm and was intent on fueling tension.

It asked the world community topped by the UN to pressure the IOA into halting its aggression.
Hamas MP Ismail Al-Ashqar said that resistance factions are entitled to retaliate to the IOA attacks.
He told the same radio station also at dawn Thursday that the attacks reflected the “bloodthirsty mentality of occupation”, adding that Israeli practices were a threat to international peace.

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza continue through Sunday; at least 3 children among killed since Thursday

author Monday August 22, 2011 00:16author by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC News Report post
According to local sources in Gaza, Israeli missile strikes continued on Saturday and Sunday in various parts of Gaza, averaging one to two air strikes an hour. A two-year old and a five-year old were among the victims of Israel's three-day long bombardment of Gaza, and a 12-year old boy was also among the 15 killed.

Early Sunday morning, a car was reportedly struck by an Israeli missile in al-Zaitoun neighborhood of Gaza City. Another airstrike in northern Gaza Sunday reportedly injured seven members of the Sultan family, including two children.

Bombing was also reported in Khan Younis, in southern Gaza, and Jabaliya, in northern Gaza.

Also since Thursday, one Israelis were killed and sixteen injured by homemade shells fired from Gaza into southern Israel. Although most of the approximately 80 shells that were fired hit open ground, one hit a home, killing one, and one hit a man running for shelter, wounding him severely. Most of the other injuries were from shrapnel.

Egyptian authorities worked with representatives of Islamic Jihad and Hamas to negotiate a ceasefire on Sunday, Israeli authorities continued the bombardment of Gaza throughout the negotiations. Several shells were also fired from Gaza into Israel on Sunday during the negotiations, causing no injuries or damage.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has threatened to carry out an all-out invasion of the Gaza Strip, similar to one in 2008-9 that killed 1400 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and nearly 400 of them children. He stated after a cabinet meeting Saturday night that Israel needs to engage in serious retaliation against Gaza for the attack on Thursday by unknown gunmen that killed eight Israelis, five of them civilians.

Thursday's attack on an Israeli bus and car took place just two days after Israeli troops stationed on the Gaza border shot and killed a mentally-disabled teenager who had wandered within 400 meters of the border -- an area that Israeli forces have designated a 'kill zone'.

Kulna Gaza-We are All Gazans

Aug-21-2011 15:34

I call on you - on us - to protest. As loudly and forcefully as possible. A new massacre in Gaza can't and shouldn't happen, and it's in our hands to prevent it.
Kulna Gaza
Kulna Gaza

(CAIRO) - Fifteen people were killed so far, and no end in sight.

Tomorrow the foreigners will be evacuated, Israel threatens with a "massive military attack", a "ground invasion" is not ruled out. Fifteen killed people, including two children. I can give their names, Malek, two years old, and Mahmoud, thirteen years. I can tell how Mahmoud's teacher has described him as an intelligent, bright student, or I can show photos of the two.
As if that would create an outcry , as if the Western media would care enough for the lives of Palestinian children. No, Israel was attacked. Israel must defend itself.
Neither the circumstances, let alone the actual perpetrators of the attack on Israel have been identified so far, every Palestinian military faction has denied any involvement in it. But Gaza is blamed, as Gaza is always to be blamed for, Gaza must be punished, Gazan blood must flow so that the murder on Israelis will be avenged.
How much blood must still flow, you Israeli generals? How many Mahmouds and Maleks will have to die, how many women and children will have to be injured and killed? The signs suggest that it will still be many. And the signs suggest that the world is going to accept it. That it will accept that innocent people are being killed who had nothing but nothing to do with the attack on Israel
But of course Palestinians must be "punished", simply because they are Palestinians. I was at the protests against the Israeli embassy in Cairo. There were also Egyptian soldiers being killed. "Regrettable", called Ehud Barak, the Israeli defense minister, the incident. Since when is it just a pity when you kill the soldiers of your neighboring country. The people outside the embassy were angry, they demanded the expulsion of the ambassador, removed the Israeli flag and replaced it with an Egyptian one.
Yet the Egyptian activists with whom I spoke were skeptical. Egypt is weak, they said. We have no president, no real political leadership, we must first rebuild our country, our economy needs to grow. Economy? I asked. Don't get me wrong. Of course I know that Egypt is in a difficult position. But it's not about economical support for a war torn country.
As we speak, Gaza is being bombed. As we speak, innocent people are dying. If Israel doesn't experience any resistance, any outcry, any appeal from the world public to act carefully, then a new massacre will happen. A 'Cast Lead' two. In which 1382 people were murdered in three weeks, including 320 children.
.
I told them, I urge you not to watch your brothers and sisters being murdered. I appealed to the Muslim community spirit, but actually I want to appeal to the humanity of each of us.
My friends in Gaza have changed their Facebook profile pictures to red letters saying: "Kulna Gaza." We are all Gaza.
In a desperate attempt to show the world that the people who are bombed there in that moment are not bloodthirsty terrorists, but people like you and me. Who feel, think, laugh and suffer like we all do. Who are sitting at home in front of their computers, locked up in a tiny coastal strip from where there is no escape, no place to be safe. They are sitting there hoping and praying that the bombs falling around them won't hit their own house, that they will live until the next day. With the Internet as the only possibility to show their existence, their suffering, to draw attention to their humanity.

Kulna Gaza

On their behalf I appeal on our humanity. Because a piece of land having nothing to exploit anymore, neither industry nor resources, which is already completely devastated by bombs, can hardly hope for political support. This land can only be helped by humanity. I appeal to your humanity not to allow any new massacre in Gaza. To show opposition. Through demonstrations, through protests.
In a country like Egypt, with really plenty of own problems, thousands of people were on the streets yesterday to demonstrate support for Gaza and to show the people there that they are not alone. Let us take it as example.
I call on you - on us - to protest. As loudly and forcefully as possible. A new massacre in Gaza can't and shouldn't happen, and it's in our hands to prevent it. Not in the hands of politicians who decide on economic terms, but in ours. It is up to us, that we prevent a new war in Gaza.
Kulna Gaza - we are all Gaza.

Vera Macht is a journalist and peace activist who has lived in Gaza for one year. Currently she is in Cairo in her way back there. She actually is in Cairo where she tries to get a permission to cross Rafah border to get back to Gaza again.

Israel kills 5-year-old terrorist in Gaza! Photo included

Gaza, (Pal Telegraph) – Many media outlets adopt the Israeli accounts without making sure about its validity.  The attack in Eilat which claimed the lives of 7 Israelis was vivid that it has targeted armed soldiers. Yet, Israeli media outlets led by Haaretz said “People” were killed, afterwards we have seen photos of the scene where military bags indicate it was a military target.

Sadly, all professional media outlets circulated that one side of the story without carrying out any journalistic efforts. BBC, CNN, AFP, Reuters and the key outlets said that civilians were attacked in Israeli resort in Eilat. Shortly, contradictions started to arise as Israeli army released photos of some of the killed soldiers.  Haaretz, published a piece of news showing Israeli PM visiting some soldiers in the hospital.

Moving to the Palestinian side, Israel retaliated quickly and killed a number of Palestinian freedom fighters. A child has been killed in the area as the attack took place within a very densely populated area. However, no single Palestinian factions claimed the responsibility of the Eilat attacks.
In the same night, Israel launched further attacks and killed a number of civilians including a boy aged 13. We can’t really confirm if this boy was a terrorist or not!

Yesterday, a Palestinian medic, his 5-year-old child, Islam and his brother were killed in Gaza city. They were targeted by a drone while in a motorcycle. None of the media outlets presented their story with balance yet they continue their bias saying Israel is responding to the Palestinian terror.
The boy Islam Qaraqi is 5 years old. The photo above shows what happened to him. He was grilled like by the Israeli attack rockets.

Islam was about to join his KG1 within days. His parents bought him some stationary and a nice bag. He didn’t wear his new clothing yet!

Sarcastically, we “believe” Israel killed this child because he planned the attacks in Israel. This little child is responsible for the death of many Israeli soldiers! Israel killed him in act of self-defense! This child is responsible for that terror in Israel which is like the terror in 9-11 in the US, 7/7 in London and Madrid bombings!

Yet again, Israel uses the term “terror” to justify its acts. However, terrorism has not been defined yet. What’s happening in Palestine is not terror but a kind of resistance of people under occupation.  That resistance is guaranteed by International law. It’s the same of the American resistance in quest of independence and the British one against the Nazis.

Israel threatens to strike Gaza painfully

[ 21/08/2011 - 04:02 PM ]

GAZA, (PIC)– Minister of Israel’s internal security Yitzhak Aharonovich threatened to deal a painful strike to Hamas Movement in response to the wave of counterattacks launched by the Palestinian resistance lately.

Aharonovich made his threats on Saturday evening during a visit to a house hit by a grad missile in Beersheba city, which led to the killing of two Jewish settlers and the injury of ten others.

“Israel will strike Hamas painfully and things will be clearer in the next few days,” he stated.
A number of right-wing Knesset members also called for responding to Beersheba attack by assassinating Hamas leaders, especially premier Ismail Haneyya and political leader Khaled Mashaal, and reinvading Gaza.

Israeli security officials held Hamas and its armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades fully responsible for Beersheba attack and demanded an immediate military response.

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper stated for its part that the Israeli security cabinet held on Saturday an urgent meeting to discuss the ways to escalate the military action against the Palestinian resistance in Gaza.

A reporter for Israel’s channel two said the Israeli army moved its tanks to Gaza borders following the military escalation, which he described as dangerous, in the area to the south of the 1948 occupied lands.

Palestinian resistance fighters were widely deployed along the borderline of Gaza in anticipation of any Israeli military moves into the Strip, according to eyewitnesses.

Hamas demands Arab League to act against Israel’s crimes in Gaza

[ 21/08/2011 - 04:09 PM ]

DAMASCUS, (PIC)– The Hamas Movement demanded the Arab League to take decisive and concrete decisions to confront Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip and its violation of Egypt’s sovereignty.

Hamas in a statement called on the Arab League to activate in its emergency meeting on Sunday the political and economic boycott against the Israeli occupation.

It also demanded the League to enforce the previous resolutions it took to break Gaza blockade and support the Palestinian people’s steadfastness.

For their part, Hamas lawmakers in the West Bank strongly denounced the international silence on Israel’s crimes in Gaza.

The lawmakers in a press release said this silence is complicity in the killing of children, women and civilians that happens everyday in Gaza, and encourages Israel to commit more crimes.

They appealed to the Arab governments to assume their responsibilities towards Gaza people and move to stop Israel’s massacres.

'Israel exploiting attacks to sway UN'

Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:16PM GMT

A Palestinian professor believes that Israel is using the attacks on its soldiers in a bid to prove to the UN that the Palestinians do not deserve a state of their own.

“This [attack on Israeli soldiers] is going to give Netanyahu enough time to launch a diplomatic attack on the Palestinians and that the Palestinians do not deserve a state of their own as a result of the attack on Israeli soldiers and civilians in Eilat,” Mukhaimer Abu Saada, a professor at al-Azhar University, told Press TV.

Israel mounted its airstrikes on the impoverished Gaza Strip, immediately after the attack on Israeli buses and a military vehicle near the Red Sea resort of Eilat, which left eight Israeli forces dead.
Tel Aviv has accused Hamas of being behind the Thursday rocket attack on Israel.

Hamas, however, has strongly denied the allegations and warned against any act of aggression against the Gaza Strip.

The renewed Israeli violence against Palestinians comes at a time when the Palestinian Authority is heading to the UN for a statehood bid in September.

Experts say instability and possible violent attacks by Israel and counter attacks by Palestinian factions will likely hamper Palestinian efforts for statehood.

More than 100 countries have so far officially recognized Palestine as a sovereign state based on the 1967 borders.

Israeli military forces have arrested at least 120 Palestinians, including members of the Islamic Hamas movement, in the southern West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

At least 100 Israeli jeeps and military vehicles raided al-Khalil early on Sunday and launched a massive arrest operation, a Press TV correspondent reported on Sunday.

Most detainees belong to Hamas, including members of the Palestinian Legislative Council Mohammed Abu J'heisha and local leaders of Hamas' social committees.

The Israeli forces have closed all entrances to the city and have been stationed on the streets.

Israel launched an airstrike on the Gaza Strip on Thursday immediately after assaults targeted two Israeli buses and a military vehicle near the Red Sea resort of Eilat, killing eight Israeli forces.

Tel Aviv has accused Hamas of being behind the Thursday rocket attack on Israel.

Hamas, however, has strongly denied the allegations and warned against any act of aggression against the Gaza Strip.

Health ministry warns of medical crisis as Israeli attacks escalate

[ 21/08/2011 - 10:48 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Spokesman for the health ministry Ashraf Al-Qudra warned that 310 types of medicines and medical consumables are no longer available in the Gaza Strip and will result in serious consequences especially in light of the escalating Israeli aggression.

"In light of the repeated Zionist attacks on our people in the Gaza Strip, we appeal to those who have living conscience to provide the health sector with its needs of medicines and medical consumables," Qudra said in a press release on Saturday.

He noted that the limited amount of anesthetic drugs are about to run out completely from emergency and surgery units because of the increasing number of causalities admitted into Gaza hospital.

Hamas: No ceasefire until Israel stops offensive

Hamas: No ceasefire until Israel stops offensive

21-08-2011,13:29

Al Qassam website- Gaza- Senior Hamas official Ahmad Bahar said Saturday that there would be no ceasefire until Israel stopped its offensive on the Palestinian people.

"Any talk about ceasefire between resistance factions and the Israeli occupation must be preceded by halting the Israeli aggression on the Palestinian people," Bahar said in a statement.

The first deputy speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council said the Palestinian people and their resistance were entitled to self-defense by any accessible means.

"The Israeli occupation fiercely attacks Gaza mistakenly believing that it is the weakest link in the current equation," he said.

Israel's reliance on "illusionary arrogance and military might" was a miscalculation, he added, warning that the resistance would "teach the enemy unforgettable lessons, and remind them that deterrence is symmetrical."

"The Palestinian people have not triggered the escalation which Israeli occupation is trying to use to achieve exposed internal and external goals."

Since Thursday, warplanes have bombarded the Gaza Strip killing 14 Palestinians and wounding dozens more.

Israeli occupation army's leaders threaten of conducting a ground attack on the Strip.

Israeli occupation forces (IOF) conducted a brutal war against the besieged Gaza Strip killing 1,400 Palestinians most were from elders women and children.

Three Palestinians, including child, injured in Israeli air strikes

Three Palestinians, including child, injured in Israeli air strikes

21-08-2011,11:28

Al Qassam website- Gaza- Three Palestinians, among them a child, were injured Saturday as Israeli warplanes carried out several strikes on the Gaza Strip.

The warplanes fired at least one missile around a petrol station at the edge of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza Strip injuring one man, Palestinian sources said.

He was transported to a local hospital, medical sources said, describing his injuries as minor.

Two others in the Al-Shaja’iyya district of Gaza were injured after being fired at by a reconnaissance plane hovering over the area.

Witnesses said reconnaissance planes struck a civilian vehicle near Muadh ben Jabal school in the Al-Shaja’iyya neighborhood in eastern Gaza at noon Saturday.

They added that at least one Palestinian was injured and lost his foot in the strike. In addition, a child was left with minor injuries in the same strike.

Since Thursday, fifteen Palestinians have died and some forty have been injured in a string of Israeli strikes.
Among the casualties was the secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committees Kamal al-Neireb and four members of the same organization during a strike in Rafah in southern Gaza Strip.

Israel kills 15 in Gaza then tries to shift blame to Hamas

Quoting from Haaretz:
“In response to the ongoing rocket fire, an IDF spokesperson stated that the military will not tolerate any attempt at harming Israeli civilians or soldiers, and will continue to “act with determination and strength against any source of terror.” The spokesperson also claimed that Hamas must be “held responsible” for the ongoing attacks.”
Israel is quickly trying to shift the blame for the war crimes it is committing in Gaza to Hamas. Suddenly those firing rockets (after 10 were killed for no reason last night, now 15) are the bad guys and Israel is the good guy doing self defense in this equation.

In times like this, what alternative would you give to the resistance groups other than fire rockets? Their families are killed, their children are either dying or becoming handicapped due to continuous raids. The 1.6 million population of Gaza is terrorized night and day, there isn’t any place in that open air prison safe from the random Israeli shelling, not even UNRWA schools as we have seen in 2009. Israel aims to collectively punish all those who live in Gaza for the crime of living in Gaza.

Let us keep in mind that for the past two years, al-Qassam and the majority of Gaza factions have respected the ceasefire treaty in order to maintain security in the besieged Gaza Strip. In fact, Hamas faced internal issues after it started suppressing armed groups who planned to launch rockets into Israeli cities. It was almost always Israel which would strike first or assassinate political figures which would prompt them to launch rockets in retaliation.

The blood thirsty leadership of Israel bombs Gaza for no reason other than their own self satisfaction. Another reason is that no one would interrupt them in their war crimes process, the US and EU leadership hurries to condemn Eilat attack while barely giving attention, if any, to those civilians slaughtered in Gaza.

And of course, let us not forget that Israel started bombing Gaza on Thursday for no reason. There is no evidence of any connection between Gaza militants and Eilat attack. The only proof the IDF claimed was that Eilat attackers used AK47, which is a weapon that only comes from Gaza (In fact the AK47 or Kalashnikov is the world’s most common firearm). This was literally said on the tongue of the IDF spokesperson Lt. Colonel Avital Leibovich interviewed by the The Real News Network’s Lia Tarachansky as This site has brought it to my attention.
Tarachansky: On what are you basing your conclusion that this group [the Popular Resistance Committees] is responsible for the terror attacks?

IDF Spokesperson: We did not say that this group was responsible for the terror attack. We based this on intelligence information as well as some facts that [we] actually presented an hour ago to some wires and journalists. Some of the findings that were from the bodies of the terrorists, and they are using for example Kalashnikov bullets and Kalashnikov rifles are very common in Gaza —

Tarachansky: Many terrorist groups use Kalashnikovs —

IDF Spokesperson: No, not many terror groups. I’m not saying — I’m referring to the terrorists that came from Gaza.

Tarachansky: Prime Minister Netanyahu said today that the group that was responsible for the terror attack was the one that was eliminated [in Gaza] and you’re saying that’s not the case?

IDF Spokesperson: I don’t know what he said [when speaking on Israeli national television] — I’m not Prime Minister Netanyahu. I’m saying that the group came from Gaza and I’m giving you proof why it came from Gaza — how we know it came from Gaza. This is all I’m saying.
Despite the continuing terror Gaza suffers, Israeli media is doing an even more horrible job. I spent yesterday going through almost all Israeli English news websites, non of those websites mentioned Gaza civilian deaths along with news on rockets coming into Israel. In the matter of fact, I kept reading news reports on Haaretz, Jerusalem Post, and Ynet to realize there is nothing about Palestinian civilian deaths, they only mentioned rockets, Israelis injured, and Gazan militants who were killed. Covering up the real news from the public is dangerous!

This tweet by +972 magazine’s Noam Sheizaf couldn’t describe it better

By reporting only rockets fired 2 Israel in its top stories & hiding news over dead in Gaza, Israeli media is making public want more blood

IDF Spokesperson: We DIDN’T say PRC was behind Eilat attack

Yesterday morning, I wrote a piece questioning the journalistic ethics of some in the Israeli media and, to a larger extent, the entire international press corps over of their rush to adopt the Israeli government claim that Gaza-based terror organization Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) were behind Thursday’s triple terror attack near Eilat. As the terror attack was unfolding, Israeli warplanes were warming up to carry out airstrikes in the Gaza strip without revealing any concrete proof  to the public confirming that the culprits of the attack were from Gaza.  After a night of bombing, a number of senior operatives in the PRC were killed along with a handful of civilians including children.
The Real News Network’s Lia Tarachansky asked IDF Spokesperson Lt. Colonel Avital Leibovitz  for evidence that the PRC was, indeed, responsible for the Eilat terror attack. Liebovitz responded that the Israel “did not say that this group was responsible for the terror attack.” This quote  distanced the IDF spokesperson from the public statements Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made on the evening of the attack placing clear responsibility on the PRC.  Backtracking in the interview, Liebovitz said,
We did not say that this group was responsible for the terror attack. We based this on intelligence information as well as some facts that [we] actually presented an hour ago to some wires and journalists. Some of the findings that were from the bodies of the terrorists, and they are using, for example, Kalashnikov bullets and Kalashnikov rifles [which] are very common in Gaza.
In response to this quote,  Paul Woodward at War in Context responded “So, the IDF says it “knows” the gunmen came from Gaza because they were using Kalashnikovs. That’s about as logical as saying they know they came from Gaza because they appeared to be Arabs.”

The simple yet difficult to answer question remains open, who is responsible for the Eilat terror attacks? If the PRC and Hamas, both of which have denied responsibility, are not the culprits, as Lt. Col Avital Liebovitz alleges in the Real News interview, why is Israel attacking targets in Gaza with overwhelming force?  Why are senior members of the Israeli and international press corps reporting unsubstantiated Israeli government claims as fact without doing the necessary legwork of revealing sources and providing verifiable proof of their material.

If the PRC episode is a harbinger of how the media is going to handle the next Israeli offensive in Gaza one sorry conclusion can be made, Prime Minister Netanyahu will be left unmolested with obloquy demanding that his government provide factual evidence to support their rationale for war.

Israel Knew Attack was Coming, Expected Kidnapping Attempt

author Friday August 19, 2011 07:46author by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies Report post
An initial investigation carried out by the Israeli army on the armed attack that targeting a bus loaded with Israeli soldiers, close to the border with Egypt, in the Israeli coastal city of Eilat, revealed that information regarding an attack was available before it took place, but pointed out a possible kidnapping attempt, not a shooting. Seven Palestinians, including children, and seven Egyptian officers were killed by Israeli bombardment.
The army stated that it found it difficult to deal with the information due to the large number of similar warnings, and that the military leadership estimated that the potential time for this attack would be at night, not in broad daylight.

The investigation also revealed that the attackers infiltrated into Israel through an area near an Egyptian military base, an unlikely location to infiltrate into Israel.

Israeli daily, Haaretz, reported that this attack was planned by the Popular Resistance Committee in the Gaza Strip, and that the fighters managed to infiltrate from the Gaza Strip into the Sinai desert through tunnels, before they travelled nearly 200 kilometers to an area that is only protected with tattered wire fence, 15 kilometers north of Eilat. They then opened fire at a bus carrying Israeli soldiers north of Netafim Crossing.

Haaretz further stated that the soldiers managed to kill five of the fighters while the Egyptian Security Forces killed two others. Israel believes that at least 15-20
fighters participated in the attack, and that most of them managed to escape.

According to Haaretz, the driver of the bus said that the attackers were dressed in Egyptian military uniforms, and that he thought that they were just repairing the border fence.

Haaretz added that the attack was initiated at noon on Thursday, and that approximately 15 gunmen, armed with rifles, grenades and explosives, infiltrated into Israel from Egypt and stationed themselves 200 meters away from each other at the Eilat Highway, Route 12, close to the border.

They then opened fire at the bus around 12:30 afternoon, wounding seven passengers. Minutes later, an empty bus and several cars arrived at the scene, and came under fire from the fighters while one of the gunmen ran towards the bus before activating his explosive belt killing himself and the bus driver.

The gunmen reportedly infiltrated into Sinai through a tunnel before they headed to an area that is 200 kilometers away, that is only protected by a tattered wire-fence, just 15 kilometers north of Eilat.

The Israel army shot and killed five gunmen while Egypt reported that its border police shot and killed two others. The rest apparently managed to escape unharmed.

Israel said that one of the fighters even fired an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenades) at a military helicopter that arrived at the scene, but missed it.

Following the attack, Israel carried out several air strikes targeting a number of areas in different parts of the Gaza Strip killing seven Palestinians, including a 2 year old child and a teenager, aged 13. At least 19 residents, including children, were injured.

It is worth mentioning that Cairo stated that seven Egyptian officers were killed by Israeli military fire, targeting them in Sinai, while several others were injured.
Following the attack, a senior Egyptian military officer headed to Sinai along with several soldiers of the special brigades to assess the situation, especially since the Egyptian soldiers were in Egyptian territory close to the border and did not infiltrate into Israel.

Egypt says that an Israeli military helicopter chased the fighters in Egyptian territory and opened fire at them wounding Egyptian military personnel.

A massive protest is planned in front of the Israeli embassy in Cairo on Friday where hundreds are expected to attend.

Lieutenant Al-Sayyed Abdul-Wahab Mabrook, north Sinai Governor, denied the Israeli claims regarding Palestinian fighters infiltrating into Egypt through the border before they headed to Eilat, and stated that these claims are impossible to believe, as he said Egypt has a firm grip on the border through traps and extensive military deployment.

Mabrook, who headed the Egyptian Border Police until he became the governor of North Sinai, stated that Egypt has full control over the border with Gaza, and that the extensive security presence was not affected by the regime change in Egypt.

He also stated that the border from Rafah in the north to Taba in the south is very long, and that Egypt’s security presence there prevents any suspects from infiltrating through the area.

Blame the Gazans— Punish them

According to the Palestine Papers, Saeb Erekat, the so-called chief Palestinian negotiator, once stated, “”If someone sneezes in Tel Aviv, I get the flu in Jericho.”

That was probably the only thing that makes sense Erekat ever said regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Except it wasn’t actually true, unless we think of Erekat, at the moment he made that statement, as every Palestinian in Gaza and replace “Jericho” with “Gaza”. So “if someone sneezes in Tel Aviv, Palestinians in Gaza were soon to be blame for it.”

Yesterday, as I woke up to the news of an attack that took place in Eilat, some 20 kilometeres south of Israel, the first thing that ever came to my mind was, “who the hell did it?”

As my brother excitedly narrated to me the details of the oddly mysterious incident, I was asinine enough to wish the assailants weren’t from Gaza. I naively said to my brother, “let’s hope they don’t turn out to be Gazans.”

Immediately then, I frenziedly went through reports of the incidents on the internet, hoping against hope the blame wouldn’t be placed upon Gaza or at least by some miraculous power, some organization outside of Gaza would officially adopt the attacks and relieve the Gazans of this insane irrationality where the Palestinians in Gaza would be eventually held responsible and “pay a heavy price” for the crimes they never committed.

Only on my previous post on this blog, I wrote, “I was being punished for a misdemeanor I never committed in the first place,” Of course, I didn’t know then that my words were as prognostic as to come into play a couple of days afterwards.

Soon enough, I was skimming a bit of news related to the incident under the title, “Barak: Gaza is the source of terrorist attacks on southern Israel”

My mind at that exact moment was this way, “but man, wait, that’s not true. I mean no one in Gaza claimed responsibility for the attack, you know, Hamas would have done, had it been them but err, I mean, you can’t just say it’s Gaza when it’s not bla bla bla”

Baloney. He wouldn’t listen. Or he wouldn’t have to listen. And he wouldn’t believe me. And he wouldn’t bother who claimed responsibility and who didn’t. And to be more accurate, that’s exactly what the so-called IDF wanted; that’s what they had been waiting for. An excuse, no matter how lame, baseless and prejudiced it might be, to exercise its favorite habit of bombing, demolishing and killing Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In fact, Israel never needed a pretext to start bombing Gaza. Israel’s warplanes do every day shell the hell out of Gaza. This was a pretext for exercising extrajudicial execution the outcome of which is still on the rise. And yes, it didn’t take long for the aerial, ground and naval operation to get under way. You can’t tell me Israel would miss this chance.

I tweeted, “”Gaza is the source of terrorist attacks on southern Israel” is as well founded as “Gaza is the source of the Ozone hole” but, yea, whatever!”

Who cares on what basis Barak’s accusing finger is pointed— exactly the same way Netanyahu’s is pointed in the photo of the above piece— toward the Palestinians in Gaza claiming they perpetrated the Eilat attacks? No basis whatsoever except the very one on which Israel is truthfully regarded as an Apartheid state: the Palestinians in Gaza are no Jews.

But what if by any means Palestinian militants in Gaza are behind the Eilat attacks? Why would Israel kill two little children? Collateral damage? Could one, then, consider the six Israeli civilians killed in the attacks as collateral damage, given the fact that two Israeli soldiers were also killed?
Of course, not. I wondered whether my little sister was a bit stupid when she innocently (naively?) commented on the Eilat attacks saying, “ya haram!” (oh pity!)? Or was that the honest and unimpeachably good-natured involuntary reflex of an innocent girl commenting on the death of another?

I knew I had the same feelings as she did, but after all it wasn’t thoughtful to display such emotions publicly this way. At least for the memory of the several would-be martyrs paying the “heavy price” the Israeli prime minister referred to.

Couldn’t it be that Mahmoud— a boy aging thirteen years just like my sister who made the above remark is— had the same comment, the same feelings, when he came to know Israeli civilians were killed in the attack— Off record:  three massive bombs just hit the area nearby, and Israeli warplanes are intensely flying over Gaza city at the moment.

Why was Mahmoud killed then?

Is that the way Israel will keep lashing out, indiscriminately killing innocent civilians in blind retaliation? Isn’t this “violence, brutality and a cowardly act of terrorism against innocent civilians”, Mrs. Clinton?

Or perhaps this is a life not worth feeling sorry for— oh dear, I can say I literally write under the fire. That was one of our missiles, you know.  Why wouldn’t the U.S. president and his secretary offer their “deepest condolences” for the families of these little children as well?

Indeed, that Obama is the first Black American president was the biggest lie in the U.S. presidential history. He looks awfully whiter than the other wealthy Zionist white congressmen.

Gaza is a Palestinian territory occupied by Israeli military forces and has been living under siege for more than five years. Those people living in the Gaza Strip are the real victims. They are the real oppressed. There is a humanitarian crisis, a collective punishment, injustice, and occupation that needs to be addressed. Israel should be held accountable for its crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip before we go about criticizing the people for firing few missiles onto their oppressor as an act of protest and defiance. Violence is never inflicted by the oppressed. US-made F16s, Apaches, unmanned overhead drones, gigantic warships, Merkava and other tanks and this whole massive war machine are the real sources of violence.

Indeed, as a friend put it, “the only ‘self-defense’ justified by a colonial occupier is to withdraw from those occupied lands. Very, very simple.” And “Israel justifying this massacre as self-defense is like a robber justifying killing the victim because they wouldn’t hand over their wallet.”

Who is behind the Eilat terror attack?

The horrific terror attacks in Oslo some weeks ago provided a valuable lesson for journalists. Almost as soon as the attacks took place, journalists throughout the world rushed to place blame on Al Qaeda. Jennifer Rubin, a conservative blogger at the Washington Post known for her extreme views on Israeli politics, wrote that the attacks were committed by Al-Qaeda terrorists and used them to attack President Barak Obama’s foreign policy objectives in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her piece was left unchanged on the Washington Post website for a full 24 hours despite evidence that the perpetrator of the attack was, in fact, a right wing Christian fanatic not connected to Al-Qaeda.

Yesterday morning, Israel was rocked by a triple terror attack which left eight people dead and moved the country to a state of high alert. Within hours of the attack, Israel began a series of aggressive airstrikes on targets in the Gaza Strip, claiming that they were reprisal attacks against the Palestinian leadership who gave the order for the Eilat operations. However, Israeli officials and their spokespeople in the media failed to provide factual evidence clearly proving responsibility. The airstrikes killed a number of senior operatives in the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), a terror group with weak links to Hamas, as well as civilians including at least one child. The speed at which Israel began airstrikes in Gaza without providing factual evidence of PRC’s involvement raises questions concerning the existence of a premeditated Israeli plan to launch a summer offensive against the population of Gaza. For the record, Hamas has publicly stated numerous times in the past 24 hours that it had nothing to do with the terror attacks in Eilat.

Despite uncertainty over those responsible for the attacks yesterday, Israeli journalists were quick to pass on government hearsay as fact. Barak Ravid, diplomatic correspondent for Haaretz, rushed to place responsibility on the PRC for the terror attacks on his Twitter feed. When I asked him to provide factual proof for his claim other than citing anonymous sources, he responded, “This is what I know from my sources. You can choose to believe or not to, like every article I publish in Haaretz.”

Shouldn’t one evaluate Ravid’s reports and claims based on the factual material which he presents? Since when does “belief” play a central role in a reporter’s credibility on specific military issues? Without knowing Ravid’s sources, it is difficult to ‘believe’ and judge them on their credibility. Ravid was not alone in placing blame on PRC as most of the international media outlets adopted the Israeli government line.

In recent months, Ravid has relied on unsubstantiated Israeli government sources for pieces which amount to glorified hearsay without basis in reality. Earlier this summer Ravid wrote a piece propagating Israeli government rumors that activists on board this year’s flotilla “may be bringing chemical substances on the ships to use against Israeli soldiers to prevent them from boarding the ships.”

Oslo should be a warning that rushing to place blame on a group for a horrific terror act without factual proof reflects poor journalistic ethics. In the Israeli context, placing blame on the PRC effectively legitimatizes Israeli airstrikes on Gaza. At the time of this writing there has been no claim of responsibility and the only proof that PRC is behind these terror attacks comes from Israeli government officials who do not cite any specific or verifiable source.  The PRC very well might be behind these attacks but the “shoot first, ask questions later” principle, accepted as mantra in Israel, often results in the loss of innocent life and should not be a fixture of Israeli journalistic ethics.

UPDATE 18:16–

The Jerusalem Post is reporting that the PRC has praised the Eilat terror attack but denied responsibility in carrying it out. Speaking with the AFP, a PRC spokesman in Gaza said, “”The occupation wants to pin this operation on us in order to escape its own internal problems.” Israel maintains that the PRC is responsible for the attacks but has yet to release any verifiable proof connecting the Gaza based group to the attack which has so far claimed eight lives.

FILLING IN THE BLANKS ON ‘TERROR’ ATTACK

STILL TOO EARLY TO TELL WHAT HAPPENED IN ISRAEL …. SO LET’S MAKE UP THE STORY
*
We’ve even learned how to ‘doctor’ photos ;)
*
It is still too early to tell whether the terrorists who carried out Thursday’s attacks exited Egypt, passed through Sinai and headed south toward the region of Eilat, or if this was the action of a terrorist cell of Islamic origins, acting for some time already in Sinai. In any case, it is clear that the Egyptian revolution that began in Tahrir Square and spread through other Arab states has now made its way into Israel.
*
That’s not the version we were fed yesterday by the Israeli press… now it’s ‘We don’t know what happened’.
*
Mubarak’s fall will lead to Israel’s demise? Is that what they want us to believe now? Read the following from HaAretz to see this viewpoint…

Mubarak falls, Sinai terror rises

The series of terror attacks near Eilat on Thursday indicate that the Egyptians are losing their grip on Sinai.

The series of terror attacks that took place early Thursday afternoon on the road leading from the Israeli-Egyptian border to Eilat did not come as a surprise to Israel’s senior security officials. They had expected it would occur at some stage or another.
The escalating security situation in the Sinai Peninsula, continuous work on the new border barrier and the frustration of terror groups within the Gaza Strip who – for some time now – have not managed to successfully carry out a terror attack from within the Strip, all pointed at the likelihood of an attempt to attack via the Egyptian border.

Over the past few months, Israel has allowed the Egyptian army to increase its forces in Sinai a number of times, allowing much larger Egyptian forces there than the Camp David Accords allowed for, including the entry of thousands of Egyptian soldiers and tanks in the El Arish region and northern Sinai, within the framework of a widespread mission against al-Qaida. It is now evident that the Egyptian efforts alone are not enough, and that the Israel Defense Forces – who over the past three decades has been able to reduce its forces along the Egyptian border, focusing instead on reinforcing the northern border, West Bank and Gaza Strip – will now have-to strengthen its presence in the south.

This is not just a case of transferring security forces. There is a far greater need to complete the construction of the southern border and its fortification via advanced observation posts, which requires hundreds of millions of shekels in increased funding for the security budget. The Finance Ministry’s spin two days ago about halving the security budget ended within 48 hours, as the gunmen opened fire near Eilat.

Beyond the financial aspect, Israel’s security heads will need to get used to a state in which, as it seems, they cannot depend on its ally, the Egyptian army, to protect its southern front.

Hamas denies Gaza hands in attacks in Israel

English.news.cn   2011-08-18 22:34:26

GAZA, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Gaza Strip ruler Hamas movement denied Thursday Israeli reports that assailants who struck in the Israeli city of Eilat came from the strip.

"The Israeli accusations against Gaza is an attempt to export Israel's internal crisis to Gaza," said Taher Al-Nounou, spokesman for the Hamas government.

Ahmed Yousef, a former adviser to Hamas, said the attacks in Eilat were "a natural response to the Israeli aggressions and to the stalemate of the peace process in the region."

At least five Israelis were killed and dozens wounded in the attacks in the famous Red Sea city of Eilat Thursday noon, as Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said that these attacks were plotted in Gaza.
"The attacks demonstrate the weakening of Egypt's control over the Sinai peninsula and the expansion of terrorist activity there, " Barak was quoted as saying. "These attacks originated in Gaza and we will act against them with full force and resolve."

The Gaza Strip is controlled by the Islamic Hamas movement, which said last week that it will tighten security along Gaza- Egypt border to restrict the illegal movement of the people through underground smuggling tunnels.
