France Warns Against Palestinian UN Bid

Saturday September 03, 2011 02:34 by Saed Bannoura - IMEMC & Agencies
French Foreign Minister, Alain Juppe, warned the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank of heading to the United Nations this month, and claimed that “heading to the UN to seek international recognition of statehood, could lead to a serious diplomatic crises”.

The statements of Juppe came as he was talking to reporters in Sopot city in Poland where EU Minister met for two days, and held informal talks on the issue.
He said that “Paris hopes that the Palestinians will seize the opportunity to reopen the paths of dialogue instead of risking a serious and deep diplomatic crisis”.

Juppe also said that “all 27 EU member countries must have a united stance regarding the September Palestinian UN move to seek recognition of statehood”.

Also, Austrian Foreign Minister, Michael Spindelegger, suggested that the EU should present its own proposal to UN, while several EU diplomats opposed the idea.

Furthermore, EU Foreign Policy Chief, Catherin Ashton, stated that EU countries currently have no time to make a decision on the issue, and how to act at the United Nations, and added that Europe must focus on mediation between Israel and the Palestinians to ensure the resumption of talks.

Ashton added that the changes and revolutions in the Arab World gave the European Union the chance to be part of determining how new democracies in the region should develop and advance.

On Wednesday, French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, called on all European countries to have a united position regarding the Palestinian UN bid.

On Thursday, Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, threatened that should the Palestinians go ahead with their plan to seek international recognition of statehood at the UN in September, Israel will void all peace agreements, and the US support to them will be jeopardized.

He said that Israel will not be committed to all signed peace agreements, and that “there are agreements that were signed with the Palestinian Authority, and not the Palestinian government, including agreements regarding exports and imports, water, and security cooperation.

The American born ambassador claimed that “the Palestinians will use the international recognition to file lawsuits against Israel in international courts”, and that “an international recognition of statehood will reduce the possibilities of achieving a peace deal”.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, stated Wednesday that the Palestinian decision to head to the UN is not, in any way, an alternative to peace talks with Israel, but a move to achieve international support to the legitimate Palestinian rights.

Abbas affirmed that the Palestinian Authority is committed to peace and security with Israel, based on the two-state solution based on the Palestinian right to live in an independent and sovereign state, living in peace next to Israel.

The United States said it strongly oppose the move, while several officials stated that Washington will use its Veto power to void the Palestinian UN move. The US believes that direct talks with Israel are the only means to achieve a peace agreement.

The Palestinians had to withdraw from talks with Israel as it violated its obligations, and resumed all of its illegal construction and expansion of Jewish-only settlements in the occupied West Bank, including in occupied East Jerusalem.

The P.A decision was also made in protest to Israel’s ongoing violations and military escalation in the occupied territories.

Published yesterday 11:13

TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma’an) -- Israel is ready to implement measures against Qatar for supporting the Palestinian UN bid for recognition in September, Israeli newspaper Maariv reported Thursday.

Qatari officials have also been forbidden to enter the West Bank or Israel.

Qatar also has strong relations with Hamas, Maariv reported Israeli officials as saying.

Iran pledges to support Palestinians

Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:43AM GMT

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaks during an interview with al-Manar TV on August 24, 2011.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has pledged the Islamic Republic's enduring support for the Palestinian cause, urging a united regional front against Israel.

“The cause of al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the support for resistance will never be taken off the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said President Ahmadinejad in an interview with the Lebanese-based al-Manar TV, quoted by the presidential website on Wednesday.

“The Zionist regime is tasked with creating constant instability in the region in order to pave the way for the presence and interference of hegemonic powers in the area. Therefore, to confront this regime would be to confront the hegemonic system and the world's oppressors and enslavers,” he added.

The Iranian chief executive further said that the issue of al-Quds is a global one and as such controlling the core issue to the Muslim world is of ultimate significance.

President Ahmadinejad also pointed out that any nation who supports humanity needs “to seek the disappearance of the Zionist regime (Israel) as the global symbol of oppression and discrimination.”

He underlined the need for a united regional front against the US and Israel and warned regional countries against following in the footsteps of the enemy.

He went on to say that Israel was established based on materialism, and represented all the hegemonic powers that seek to run the world through “chicanery and egotism”.

Regarding Palestinians' efforts to gain the UN recognition for a Palestinian state according to the 1967 borders, President Ahmadinejad said the Palestinian state already exists, but the hegemonic system has been trying to replace it with a fake regime.

He stated that Iran has always believed that the Palestinian land belongs to Palestinians, but added that the Islamic Republic supports the formation of a Palestinian government.

This comes as Muslims all across the world are expected to take part in the International Quds Day rallies on Friday to voice their support for Palestinians.

Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, designated the last Friday of Ramadan as the International Quds Day, during which Muslims across the world hold rallies to show their solidarity for Palestinians.

Spain: ‘Time is right’ for Palestine Recognition

24.08.11 - 13:56

Spain’s minister of Foreign Affairs, Trinidad Jimenez that Spain is pushing the European Union to work towards the recognition of a Palestinian state.

According to Jimenez, who was speaking in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, the two state solution “is an objective [Spain] has been trying to achieve for years, and I think this is the time to take a step forward”.

On September 2, Foreign Ministers from the European Union will meet in Sopot, Poland, in a summit that will focus on the Middle East. Syria’s and Libya’s crises will be the main topic on the agenda, along with Palestine’s bid for recognition at the UN.

Madrid advocates a unified position of support for the Palestinians at the UN amongst all EU member states. In the event that this is not achievable, however, it would like see a majority of states acting together. It considers this approach would be more useful for their bid than only isolated declarations of support.

‘We feel that now is the time to do something and give Palestinians hope that their state may become a reality,’ said Jimenez, ‘We have to give a signal, or frustration will build among the Palestinian population,’ she added. ‘They too want to be part of the movement towards democracy and freedom which the Arab world is going through at the moment.

She added that, ‘Going to the United Nations can’t be seen as an act of hostility against anyone… It’s much better to use international legal channels than any other method.’

Together with Palestine recognition, Jimenez also emphasized the need to revive negotiations between Israel and Palestine. “We also call for dialogue between the parties to discuss the consequences of this recognition regarding the capital, refugees, borders, etc.” she said.
