Look at my butt! Airport guards embarrass Israel
Ketika Dua Mahasiswa Palestina Bicara di Kongres AS
Rabu, 27/07/2011 22:31 WIB
(aisyah/ma'an)

Mayoritas Israel Tak Puas atas Kinerja Netanyahu
Senin, 25/07/2011 16:49 WIB

Glenn Beck compares Norway victims to Hitler Youth
WASHINGTON – Rightwing US broadcaster Glenn Beck has come under proverbial fire again, this time for comparing the Labor party camp on the Norwegian island of Utoya, where dozens of youths were gunned down Friday, to Hitler's infamous Hitler Youth. "There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler youth. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing," Beck stated in his radio show Monday.
The remark was panned immediately by various media outlets; and Torbjorn Eriksen, the former press secretary to Norway's premier, said Beck has sunk to a "new low." "Young political activists have gathered at Utoya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about," Eriksen told The Daily Telegraph. "Glenn Beck's comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful," he added.
Such incidents, compounded by a string of other damaging remarks, sagging ratings and a mass departure of advertisers, prompted the cable network to ax the show. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Gilad Atzmon: Massacre in Norway-- More About the Jewish Right Wing Connection
Monday, July 25, 2011 at 11:05AM Gilad Atzmon
You are advised to read the article in full here
Here are some of the ‘pearls’ produced by the pro-war Jewish rightwing magazine, just a few hours before Behring Breivik picked up his guns and launched into his lethal journey:
“The infamous Norwegian Vidkun Quisling, who assisted Nazi Germany as it conquered his own country, must be applauding in his grave…In the latest example of Norwegian collaboration with the enemies of the Jews, Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere declared during a press conference this week, alongside Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, that “Norway believes it is perfectly legitimate for the Palestinian president to turn to the United Nations” to seek recognition of an independent Palestinian state.”
“During the Nazi occupation of Norway, nearly all Jews were either deported to death camps or fled to Sweden and beyond. Today, Norway is effectively under the occupation of anti-Semitic leftists and radical Muslims, and appears willing to help enable the destruction of the Jewish state of Israel.”
“Norway’s Labor Party lawmaker Anders Mathisen has gone even further and publicly denied the Holocaust. He said that Jews “exaggerated their stories” and “there is no evidence the gas chambers and or mass graves existed.” While the Norwegian political establishment and opinion-maker elite may not have reached that point of lunacy just yet, they do tend to treat Muslims as the victims of Israeli oppression – as if today’s Muslims are filling the shoes of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and today’s Nazis are the Israelis.”
“Socialist leader Kristin Halvorsen has been leading the boycott Israel campaign. While serving as Norway’s finance minister, she was amongst the demonstrators at an anti-Israel protest, in which a poster read (translated): “The greatest axis of evil: USA and Israel.” Among the slogans repeatedly shouted at the demonstration was (as translated) “Death to the Jews!”
“Last year, the Norwegian government decided to divest from two Israeli entities working in the West Bank. Norway’s sovereign wealth fund divested from the Israeli company Elbit, because it has worked on the Israeli security fence that keeps out Palestinian suicide bombers. Israel has also been blocked from bidding for Norwegian defense contracts.”
“Part of the motivation for this anti-Semitism is the influx into Norway in recent decades of masses of Muslims from Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and elsewhere. Multiculturalism has taught Norway’s cultural elite to take an uncritical, even obsequious, posture toward every aspect of Muslim culture and belief. When Muslim leaders rant against Israel and the Jews, the reflexive response of the multiculturalist elite is to join them in their rantings. This is called solidarity.”
The truth of the matter is surely clear by now : it is Jewish right wing pro-war platforms such as FrontPage Magazine, Daniel Pipes, Harry’s Place and others following their example, that consciously, openly , deviously and divisively cultivate a prevalent culture of hate and Islamophobia.
Was Behring Breivik a follower of FrontPage Magazine or the equally inciting and hateful Harry’s Place? We cannot know for sure yet -- but hopefully we will find out soon.
However, the message should be urgent and clear to all of us: police, intelligence and home security services around the world must surely investigate, and clampdown on these hate inspiring outlets, immediately. Their motivations, aims and activities must be brought under scrutiny and questioned. For the sake of peace and our general safety, law makers in Europe and America had better quickly put into place the necessary measures to restrain the activity of these Zionist warmongers in our midst

Anders Behring Breivik, a perfect product of the Axis of Islamophobia
On 07.23.11, By Max
Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store visits the Utoya Labor Youth camp a day before Breivik's killing spree. He earned loud cheers with an unapologetic call for Palestinian rights.
As horrific as Breivik’s actions were, he can not be dismissed as a “madman.” His writings contain the same themes and language as more prominent right-wing Islamophobes (or those who style themselves as “counter-Jihadists”) and many conservatives in general. What’s more, Breivik was articulate and coherent enough to offer a clear snapshot of his ideological motives. Ali Abunimah and Alex Kane have posted excellent summaries of Breivik’s writings here and here and a full English translation is here. It is also worth sitting through at least a portion of Breivik’s tedious video manifesto to get a sense of his thinking.
From a tactical perspective, Breivik was not a “lone wolf” terrorist. Instead, Breivik appeared to operate under a leaderless resistance model much like the Christian anti-abortion terrorists Scott Roeder and Eric Rudolph. Waagner and Rudolph organized around the Army of God, a nebulous group that was known only by its website and the pamphlets its members passed around in truck stops and private meetings. If they received material or tactical support, it occurred spontaneously. For the most part, they found encouragement from like-minded people and organizations like Operation Rescue, but rarely accepted direct assistance. Breivik, who emerged from the anti-immigrant Norwegian Progress Party (which built links with America’s Tea Party) and drifted into the English/Norwegian Defense League sphere of extremism, but who appeared to act without formal organizational support, reflects the same leaderless resistance style as America’s anti-abortion terrorists.
While in many ways Breivik shares core similarities with other right-wing anti-government terrorists, he is the product of a movement that is relatively new, increasingly dangerous, and poorly understood. I described the movement in detail in my “Axis of Islamophobia” piece, noting its simultaneous projection of anti-Semitic themes on Muslim immigrants and the appeal of Israel as a Fort Apache on the front lines of the war on terror, holding the line against the Eastern barbarian hordes. Breivik’s writings embody this seemingly novel fusion, particularly in his obsession with “Cultural Marxism,” an increasingly popular far-right concept that positions the (mostly Jewish) Frankfurt School as the originators of multiculturalism, combined with his call to “influence other cultural conservatives to come to our…pro-Israel line.”
Breivik and other members of Europe’s new extreme right are fixated on the fear of the “demographic Jihad,” or being out-populated by overly fertile Muslim immigrants. They see themselves as Crusader warriors fighting a racial/religious holy war to preserve Western Civilization. Thus they turn for inspiration to Israel, the only ethnocracy in the world, a country that substantially bases its policies towards the Palestinians on what its leaders call “demographic considerations.” This is why Israeli flags invariably fly above black-masked English Defense League mobs, and why Geert Wilders, the most prominent Islamophobic politician in the world, routinely travels to Israel to demand the forced transfer of Palestinians.
Judging from Breivik’s writings, his hysterical hatred of the Labor Party’s immigration policies and tolerance of Muslim immigrants likely led him target the government-operated summer camp at Utoya. For years, the far-right has singled Norway out as a special hotbed of pro-Islam, pro-Palestinian sentiment, thanks largely to its ruling Labor Party. In 2010, for instance, the English Defense League called Norway a future site of “Islamohell,” “where unadulterated political correctness has ruled the roost, with sharp talons, for decades.” Yesterday, when the Wall Street Journal editorial page rushed to blame Muslim terrorists for what turned out to be Breivik’s killing spree, it slammed the Norwegian government for pulling troops from Afghanistan and demanding that Israel end its siege of Gaza. For his part, Breivik branded the Labor Party as “traitors.”
There is no clear evidence that Breivik’s support for the Israeli right played any part in his killing spree. Nor does he appear to have any connection with the Israeli government. However, it is worth noting that in November 2010, the Israeli government joined the right-wing pile on, accusing the Norwegian government of “anti-Israel incitement” for funding a trip for students to New York to see the “Gaza Monologues” play. Then, the day before Breivik’s terror attack, which he planned long in advance, Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stor visited the Labor Youth camp at Utoya. There, he was met with demands to support the global BDS movement and to support the Palestinian Authority’s unilateral statehood bid. “The Palestinians must have their own state, the occupation must end, the wall must be demolished and it must happen now,” the Foreign Minister declared, earning cheers from the audience.
Breivik’s writings offer much more than a window into the motives that led him to commit terror. They can also be read as an embodiment of the mentality of a new and internationalized far-right movement that not only mobilizes hatred against Muslims, but is also able to produce figures who will kill innocent non-Muslims to save the Western way of life.

Norway youths discussed Palestine prior to attack
Forty-eight hours before Friday massacre, teens participating in ruling party youth camp met with Norwegian foreign minister. Some called for boycott of Israel
The teenagers who took part in Norway's ruling party youth camp in the island of Utoya met with Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere and demanded he recognize Palestine on Wednesday, two days before the deadly terror attack which left many of them dead.
Gahr Stoere told the youths that the Palestinians deserve a country of their own and that the occupation must end, Norwegian website Politisk reported. Several of the youths waved signs reading: "Boycott Israel."
Earlier this week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited Norway and was told that Oslo will recognize Palestine, but not just yet.

Ruling party youth camp prior to attack
The Norwegian FM told the youths Oslo is waiting for the official Palestinian proposal to be submitted to the UN in September.
Eskil Pedersen, leader of the Workers' Youth League said that the movement endorses a financial embargo on Israel.
He said that they will pursue a more active policy in the Middle East and expressed support for the resumption of peace talks. Gahr Stoere agreed, but said a boycott was not the way, explaining it will turn the dialogue into a monologue.

NORWEGIAN TERROR ~~ WHEN IN DOUBT, BLAME THE MUSLIMS
July 23, 2011 at 10:15
Any tragedy that occurs these days is followed by a ‘knee jerk’ reaction by the jerks of the world, BLAME THE MUSLIMS!
*
No matter where, no matter how, there must have been Muslims involved. This ‘mentality’ serves the interests of both the United States and Israel in allowing them to continue with their Islamophobic agenda.
*
Overheard in Jerusalem last evening… “No country deserves such a horrendous attack more than Norway does, how dare they support a Palestinian state!” A second later these same idiots were blaming Muslims for it. But, can we expect logical thinking from such illogical people?
*
In reality, the apprehended suspect is an anti Islamic, Christian nationalist (whatever that means). His motive may have been to get Muslims blamed for his deed.
*
Arrested: Anders Behring Breivik (32). Photo: PRIVATE
*
Apparently, the suspect was quite open about his beliefs on his FaceBook page which makes one wonder why it is only anti zionist pages that seem to be deleted by the administrators of that Site. Right wing, ‘Christian’ extremism is OK to write about.
*
The press, the Telegraph in particular, was quick to ‘point out’ it was either the work of right wing extremists or al-Quaeda (how could they not be blamed?). Again blaming the Muslims when in doubt, even if the group being blamed is nothing more than a Mossad operative.
*
As the date approaches when Palestine is declared a Free and Independent nation, we can probably expect to see more such horrors in various parts of the world. As the following map gets more dark green areas daily, both the US and Israel have their work cut out for them…
And ya’know what? IT WON’T WORK!

How a clueless "terrorism expert" set media suspicion on Muslims after Oslo horror
Submitted by Benjamin Doherty on Sat, 07/23/2011 - 00:27
Immediately after news of the bombing of government buildings in Norway’s capital Oslo, the Internet buzzed with speculation about who might have done it and why. Most speculation focused on so-called Islamist militancy and Muslims. The urge to speculate after grave events is understandable, but the focus of speculation, its amplification through social media, its legitimization in mainstream media, and the privilege granted to so-called experts is a common pattern.
The danger of such speculation is that it adds little knowledge but causes real harm by spreading fear and loathing of Muslims, immigrants and other vulnerable and routinely demonized populations, and whether intentional or not, assigns collective guilt to them.
“Experts” who supposedly study this topic — almost always white men and very often with military or government backgrounds — direct suspicion toward Muslims by pointing to claims of responsibility on “jihadi” web sites that only they have access to. Notorious attacks invariably inspire false claims of responsibility, or false reports of claims of responsibility, but this apparently doesn’t discourage the media and experts from giving them undue attention.
From the “experts” to The New York Times to the world…
The New York Times originally reported:A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. In later editions, the story was revised to read:
Initial reports focused on the possibility of Islamic militants, in particular Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or Helpers of the Global Jihad, cited by some analysts as claiming responsibility for the attacks. American officials said the group was previously unknown and might not even exist. The source is Will McCants, adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University. On his website he describes himself as formerly “Senior Adviser for Countering Violent Extremism at the U.S. Department of State, program manager of the Minerva Initiative at the Department of Defense, and fellow at West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center.” This morning, he posted “Alleged Claim for Oslo Attacks” on his blog Jihadica:
This was posted by Abu Sulayman al-Nasir to the Arabic jihadi forum, Shmukh, around 10:30am EST (thread 118187). Shmukh is the main forum for Arabic-speaking jihadis who support al-Qaeda. Since the thread is now inaccessible (either locked or taken down), I am posting it here. I don’t have time at the moment to translate the whole thing but I translated the most important bits on twitter. The Shmukh web site is not accessible to just anyone, so he is the primary source for this claim. McCants stated from the beginning that the claim had been removed or hidden, and on Twitter he even cast doubt on whether it was a claim of responsibility at all.
Will McCants This is not necessarily a claim of responsibility. Could just be forum user blowing hot air. forum members also confused abt who this guy is
Jul 22 via webFavoriteRetweetReply
Will McCants For those asking, the “claim” from the Helpers of the Global Jihad was posted to Shmukh, the most elite jihadi forum (it’s in Arabic)
Jul 22 via webFavoriteRetweetReply
Will McCants @leialya it is a password protected forum. you won’t be able to access it without password. www.shamikh1.info
Jul 22 via webFavoriteRetweetReply
It’s too bad McCants didn’t exercise the caution and restraint that he says the forum moderator did.
All of this comes only from Will McCants. In his original post, he named the source and identified the organization (in Arabic) but provided no context. Did he know who the author Abu Sulayman al-Nasir was? Had he heard of this group Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami before? These are the kinds of answers a “terrorism expert” should provide.
How media amplified a false claim
The media also failed. They reported on the claims McCants disseminated because his position and perceived expertise gave these claims credibility. Would The New York Times have required multiple sources and independent confirmation of the existence of the posting and its contents if it had not come from someone with McCants’ supposedly solid credentials? For hours after McCants posted the update that the claim of responsibility was retracted, BBC, the New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post were still promoting information originally sourced from him. The news was carried around the world and became the main story line in much of the initial coverage.
The threshold for a terrorism expert must be very low. This whole rush to disseminate a false, unverifiable and flimsily sourced claim strikes me as a case of an elite fanboy wanting to be the first to pass on leaked gadget specs.
In fact, much of the online discussion today focused on the notion of terrorism expertise, what it means and who has it.

@bungdan Before you go any farther, stop and read this excellent if dated essay by Norway’s own Thomas Hegghammer: http://bit.ly/pP8RiK

Speculation hurts real people
A crucial absence in everyone’s concept of “terrorism expertise” is insight into the functioning of this knowledge in a sensationalistic, reckless media and political environment where Islamophobia is the norm. Even the Christian President of the United States is routinely suspected of being Muslim as if it were a crime, and accused of sympathy with Islamist “radicals” and “terrorists.”Disseminating false, unverifiable information should be a blemish on McCants’ credibility, but what is more likely is that his failure will harm other communities elsewhere before it harms his career.
Arnfinn Storsveen Is overwhelmed over the support for Norway from muslims worldwide, even though the press early argued it was an islamic terrorist act. Thanx

As the scale of the catastrophe to strike Norway was revealed, we also learned that Anders Behring Breivik, the only suspect to be arrested in the attack, had a history of disseminating anti-Muslim and xenophobic ideas on the Internet, and cited approvingly none other than Daniel Pipes, a notorious Islamophobe, Bush administration appointee to the United States Institute of Peace and self-described “terrorism expert.”

Norway to recognise Palestine if peace talks fail
Norway to recognise Palestine if peace talks fail
Norway’s foreign minister has announced that the country will be among the first to recognise a Palestinian state if negotiations with Israel fail to make headway by September. A nine-month deadline has been set by the Palestinians for proclaiming independence, which would also coincide with the completion of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad’s two-year effort to set up the basic institutions of a state.
Speaking in Ramallah, Norwegian foreign minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said Oslo is striving to help with the development of the Palestinian economy but still believes that the political process towards peace could be a success.
“We are working to develop the economy of Palestine to reach that goal,” Stoere told reporters. “If, by August or September, there is no progress on the political track, I think the climate will change,” he added.
When asked if Norway would recognise a Palestinian state after that point, Stoere said, “Norway will be among the first states [in Europe] who will recognise a Palestinian state when there is an act as an international team” to that end. Until then, he went on to say, Norway will continue to back negotiations between the two warring nations while supporting Fayyad’s plan.
Norway’s foreign minister, who heads a committee in charge of raising international aid for Palestine, also told reporters in Jordan last week that Norway is committed to rallying donors to help build Palestinian institutions.

Aktivis AS Siapkan Aksi Massa di Gedung Putih dan PBB Bulan September
Aktivis AS Siapkan Aksi Massa di Gedung Putih dan PBB Bulan September
Kamis, 21/07/2011 22:48 WIB
(aisyah/imemc)

THE GREATEST THREAT TO ISRAEL IS AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE FOR PALESTINE
THE GREATEST THREAT TO ISRAEL IS AN EXPRESSION OF LOVE FOR PALESTINE
July 20, 2011 at 09:02
*
Israel wants you to hate the very people they claim do not even exist. Israel will not allow you to express love for those people.
*
The American Boat To Gaza was ‘armed’ with expressions of that love in the thousands from American citizens. To Israel, this was a dangerous ‘cargo’, possibly even one they can call ‘explosive’. Those on board the ship were definitely a dangerous lot, mostly retired folks, Jews, and even an 86 year old holocaust survivor …. most definitely a group not to allow entrance to Gaza.
Doesn’t Israel realise how stupid they look for stopping these boats? Don’t they realise that by their actions the Flotilla was a huge success without ever reaching the shores of Gaza. The million and a half imprisoned residents of the Strip are aware of the expressions of love that were aboard. Knowing that they are not alone in their struggle to end the siege is a victory in itself, as well as knowing that the Israeli offensive will not stop further Flotillas from attempting to reach them in the near future. They will not stop till all of Palestine is free.

Here is what others have to say about the situation…
Video: IDF officer aims rifle at Palestinian civilian's head
IDF launches probe over YouTube video; army officials say incident appears to be grave
A video posted on YouTube Wednesday shows an IDF officer cocking his weapon and aiming it at the head of a Palestinian civilian during military operations in a West Bank village.
While the video does not show whether the officer's weapon was loaded, IDF officials admitted that on the face of it the incident appears to be grave, adding that a Military Police investigation has been launched.
The video, filmed last month, shows the Israeli officer yelling at Rabi Abu Maria and aiming a rifle at his head twice. The incident followed after Abu Maria's cousin was detained by IDF troops.
The arrest took place on June 18th and soldiers did not face resistance from local residents. Following the arrest, the suspect's relatives surrounded the soldiers and asked them for the reason of detainment. The officer shown in the video ordered them to leave, before aiming his weapon at Abu Maria.
Abu Maria recounted the incident in a conversation with Ynet: "I'm a taxi driver and I was next to a gas station. I saw my cousin who works at the station being detained, and I told the troops I only wish to say goodbye to him. The officer got upset at me and aimed his weapon at my head, saying 'why do you care, go away.'"
The Palestinian man told Ynet that since the incident he has been having trouble returning to the site and is no longer able to drive his cab. "I don't understand why they did it to me. I'm just a person who wishes to live, with a wife and four children. My wife is also scared after a weapon was aimed at her husband, and the children aren't doing too well either."
"There are plenty of officers who talk to us with respect and in a proper manner. I don't know why this officer behaves this way," he said.
Another local resident, Issa al-Salib, said that relatives of the detained man asked the soldiers questions but did not interrupt in their work. He too stressed that the officer's conduct was anomalous and does not characterize the behavior of other soldiers in the area.
"We've been having arguments with the soldiers, but they don't end like that," he said. "He's not normal, there's something wrong with him. He's overcome by hatred. This soldier's behavior is known as particularly provocative, and ever since he arrived in the area two months ago we suffer greatly."
On Friday, local residents are planning to hold a protest at the entrance to their village following the soldier's conduct. "The army can't give such person arms and authority at such a sensitive location," al-Salib said.
Responding to the incident, the IDF Spokesman's Office issued the following statement: "On the face of it, it appears to be a grave incident. This incident was brought to the attention of commanders, and at the same time it was decided to launch a Military police investigation into it."

I'm just a person who wishes to live, with a wife and four children. My wife is also scared after a weapon was aimed at her husband, and the children aren't doing too well either."
'Other officers not like that'
Abu Maria stressed that the incident he encountered was an exception."There are plenty of officers who talk to us with respect and in a proper manner.

Report: Israeli killed in New Zealand earthquake was Mossad agent
- Published 23:27 19.07.11
- Latest update 23:27 19.07.11
Local media reports Ofer Mizrahi, killed in the Christchurch earthquake in February, was part of a team trying to infiltrate sensitive computer systems.
By Sefi KrupskyAuthorities have launched an investigation into what a senior security official called "suspicious activities of several groups of Israelis during and immediately after the earthquake."

There was extensive local media coverage of the search teams that were sent from Israel after the earthquake. The two private search parties were sent without prior coordination with officials in Jerusalem, and were met with difficulties after the local authorities prevented them from searching in the area.
The report claims Israel's reaction to the casualties and missing Israeli citizens was unprecedented. For example, Prime Minister John Key, who is Jewish, spoke with his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu four times the day of the earthquake. The report also claims that Israeli ambassador Shemi Tzur , who is posted in the capital Wellington, immediately ordered plane tickets to Christchurch. Furthermore, Home Front Defense Minister Matan Vilnai also left immediately for the disaster-struck city.
The three Israelis who survived the car crash that killed Mizrai fled the scene and left him behind, the report continues, saying Mizrahi had five passports. New Zealand security services suspected he was a Mossad agent after the Israeli search party took interest in his many passports and after his three friends' quick departure back to Israel. Security services also took note that a Facebook page set up in remembrance of Mizrahi has only five "likes."
Shemi Tzur, the Israeli ambassador in Wellington, denied the allegations and dismissed them as "science fiction."

Iceland against Israel
Op-ed: Iceland’s government has been showing considerable arrogance toward Israel
With his visit to the Palestinian Authority, Gaza, Jordan and Egypt last week, Ossur Skarphedinsson, the Social Democratic Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, came to put his two cents into the Middle Eastern debate.
Skarphedinsson enhanced his country’s relations with the Palestinians and promised them Iceland’s support in their bid for statehood at the next United Nations General Assembly. He studiously avoided any diplomatic contact with Israel on that trip. Earlier this month, the Icelandic Birgitta Jonsdottir was the first parliamentarian of any country to visit participants of the failed second Gaza flotilla.
Iceland is a country with a population of about 320,000, just a little more than the city of Haifa. It received much international publicity when its three major banks collapsed in 2008. Creditors abroad lost tens of billions of dollars. The country’s Financial Supervisory Authority had dramatically failed in its task. Last year, not through any fault of its own, Iceland once again received major publicity when ash clouds from an eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano caused major disturbances in European air traffic.
Besides that, one hears little about Iceland in Israel. Relations between the two countries under the present left-wing government of Iceland are plainly bad. This finds expression in many ways. At the previous UN General Assembly, Iceland’s foreign minister spoke out against Israel. When FM Lieberman wrote to him on this issue, Skarphedinsson did not answer. He did not even confirm receipt of Lieberman’s letter. Skarphedinsson also ordered Icelandic diplomats to remain in the hall while Iranian President Ahmadinejad spoke at the Durban review conference in Geneva in 2009. Diplomats from almost all other European countries left.
Iceland’s government shows considerable arrogance toward Israel. Skarphedinsson represents a country that has caused huge financial damage abroad. Yet he believes that he should tell sovereign Israel how it should run its affairs. On his recent visit he requested that Israel unconditionally abandon its maritime blockade on Gaza. He also condemned Israel’s defensive actions during the first flotilla. Moreover, the Icelandic Parliament condemned Israel and some members suggested placing sanctions on the Jewish state or even breaking off relations with it. When the Olmert government sent Minister Yuli Tamir to Europe during the Gaza Cast Lead war, Iceland refused to receive her.
Iceland’s anti-Semitic history has been studied by the only expert on the country’s attitude toward Jews, Vilhjálmur Örn Vilhjálmsson, who lives in Denmark. In an essay published in my book, Behind the Humanitarian Mask: The Nordic Countries, Israel and the Jews, he notes that the first “Jew” who came to Iceland in 1625 was a Christian convert from Copenhagen. During that same century, an Icelandic clergyman Hallgrimur Pétursson composed a wide selection of hymns. In these hymns, Jews are mentioned more than 50 times, yet only for their “perfidy, falseness, wickedness and other malice.”
In the 1930s, a few Jewish refugees tried to escape to Iceland, several of them in vain. Some of the female refugees were allowed to stay because they married Icelanders.
At the end of the 1980s, Efraim Zuroff, Director of the Israel branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, tried to have war criminal Evald Mikson prosecuted. Mikson had been involved in the murder of Jews in his native Estonia. He found refuge in Iceland, where his sons played in the national soccer team. Zuroff’s justified claims against an accomplice of murderers led to many Icelandic media attacks toward Israel. It took until 1993 before the Icelandic government set up a commission to investigate Mikson’s war crimes. Mikson, however, died shortly afterwards. Only after his death did the investigators find that he had indeed committed atrocities.
When this issue was debated in parliament, some of its members felt compelled to make comments on the Middle East and Israeli political attitudes. One of these was Olafur Grimsson, leader of the People’s Alliance, a left-wing party. He spoke about the Israeli “murder” of Hezbollah leader Abbas Musawi and of Israeli attacks on southern Lebanese towns. Grimsson has been President of Iceland since 1996. As a curious aside - in 2003, he married an Israeli woman.
Another ignoble act by Iceland was its 2005 decision to grant citizenship to the rabid anti-Semite of Jewish ancestry, former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, who was detained in Japan at the time.
One may wonder what motivated the Foreign Minister of Iceland, with its small population and poor international record, to come to the Middle East and behave as he did. Is it just plain egotism, for which Skarphedinsson is well-known in Iceland? Is it because he represents a left-wing government? Or perhaps because Iceland endeavours to become a non-permanent member of the Security Council after its failed bid in the 2008 elections? For this it would need the many votes of Muslim countries.

Unimpressive history
Iceland does not have much to be proud about regarding its historical behavior toward Jews. Few Jews live in the country. In the past, there have only been Jewish communities established at times when there were either British or American troops stationed in Iceland with a substantial number of Jewish soldiers among them.Iceland’s anti-Semitic history has been studied by the only expert on the country’s attitude toward Jews, Vilhjálmur Örn Vilhjálmsson, who lives in Denmark.
